ATHLETICS CASE STUDY: ST. THOMAS UNIVERSITY
MIAMI, FLORIDA BOBCATS’ OFFENSIVE STRATEGY AGAINST COVID-19
Background
In the summer of 2020, the NAIA mandated that all athletes receive a PCR COVID-19 test before participating in their particular sport. St Thomas University had close to 1,000 student-athletes and immediately needed an accurate, fast, and cost-effective way to do COVID-19 testing.
Outcome
STU and Gravity Diagnostics worked together to find a solution to meet testing needs and soon implemented gold standard PCR COVID-19 testing across the university’s athletics’ programs. STU went from testing their student-athletes before every competition, to testing them every day. Anyone that exhibited COVID-19 symptoms was tested and quarantined depending on the results. Only 2 games were canceled because of COVID protocols. As of April 2021, STU has been able to safely play 325/327 games. The university attributes this to daily symptom monitoring and Gravity’s quick COVID-19 testing turnaround. Gravity Diagnostics and STU worked together to create a solution that also helped other colleges in The Sun Conference roll out COVID-19 testing at their locations.
